Obituaries: Arthur Lee ‘Dude’ Joki

Arthur Lee “Dude” Joki, 77, of Grants Pass, formerly of Astoria, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at home.
He was born May 2, 1930, in Astoria.
In 1953, he received a full medical retirement from the U.S. Army, and moved to Grants Pass.
On March 3, 1956, he married Mary Frances McCormick in Reno, Nev. She survives, residing in Grants Pass.
Mr. Joki worked on the log pond at Bates Lumber Company in Merlin until 1961, when his medical condition forced him to retire.
In 1965, he was an early recipient of one of the world’s first successful artificial aortic heart valves developed by pioneer heart surgeon, Dr. Albert Starr. At the time of his death, Mr. Joki was one of the four longest-living people in the world with an artificial heart valve.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Joki of Portland; a daughter, Elizabeth Barrett of Boise, Idaho; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of life and gathering has already been held.
