Paul Arthur Hirst, 62, of Ocean Park, Wash., died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at home.

He was born April 23, 1945, in Richland, Wash., to Gordon A. and Martha Hirst. His stepmother, Thelma Hirst of Sequim, Wash., survives. His parents preceded him in death.
In 1963, he graduated from Richland High School. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington in 1967.
His wife of 41 years, Mary Ann Hirst, survives.

Mr. Hirst was an engineer who worked for several different companies over his career, from Honeywell to Heart Technology, which took him to Minneapolis, Auburn, Ind., Riverside, Calif., Renton, Wash., and finally Liberty Lake, Wash. He was successful in getting several patents for products ranging from gas valves to arterial medical devices. He retired to the Long Beach (Wash.) Peninsula in 2001.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ken Hirst of Montesano, Wash., and Matthew and Jennifer Hirst of Puyallup, Wash.; a grandson, Teagan John-Paul Hirst of Puyallup; four step-siblings and their spouses, Dona and Scott McLean of Sequim, Trudy and Merlin Simonson of Germany, Dennis and Cathy Wheeler of Redmond, Wash., and Jodi and Mike Walker of University Place, Wash.; a niece, Deborah Hirst of Paris; and many other family members.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon E. Hirst.
At Mr. Hirst’s request, no service will be held.
