Astoria had the “good Hans” award Friday night at home, as senior Hans Lund poured in 19 points to help the Fishermen to a 58-49 win over Gladstone in a nonleague boys basketball game at the Brick House.
The Fishermen “free throw’d” their way to the victory, as Astoria finished 16-of-38 at the free throw line, to Gladstone’s 9-of-12.
Gladstone – which was short-handed coming in – finished even more short-handed, as the Gladiators lost three players to fouls.
Astoria built a quick 10-0 lead, with Lund scoring six points in the opening quarter.
Gladstone responded with nine straight points to pull within one, but that was as close as the Glads would come, as Astoria followed with a 15-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Lund.
Jordan Poyer scored 18 points (eight in the fourth quarter) and Chris Meyer added seven for the Fishermen, now 2-0.
Naselle 61, Warrenton 52
NASELLE, Wash. – Kyle Burkhalter scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures Friday night, in a 61-52 nonleague win over Warrenton.
Nathan Sultemeier added 13 points and Conor Smith scored 10 for the Comets, who trailed 30-26 at halftime, before going on a 15-4 run in the third quarter.
Kevin Moore scored 14 points and Ryan Lampi added 13 for the Warriors.
Austin Burkhalter pulled down 12 rebounds for Naselle.
Knappa 75, Ilwaco 68
KNAPPA – Knappa connected on 23-of-38 free throws in the final 11 minutes of Friday night’s game against visiting Ilwaco, enough to score a 75-68 nonleague win over the Fishermen.
Overall, the Loggers were 29-of-45 at the free throw line.
Ilwaco held a slim 30-29 halftime lead, and led 42-40 as late as the 3:21 mark of the third period.
Tevan Klauser and Nate West scored 15 points apiece for the Loggers, who improve to 2-0.
Steve Tadei added 11 points and Lars Gjovik scored 10 for Knappa, which went on a 21-12 run in the third period.
Ryan Blake scored 18 points for Ilwaco, which was 11-of-20 on free throws.
WRESTLING
Warriors third, Gulls fourth
ROCKAWAY BEACH – The Warrenton wrestling team took nine wrestlers to the Neah-Kah-Nie Invitational Saturday, and all nine placed to help the Warriors to a third place team finish.
The host Pirates won the team title, followed by Nestucca, Warrenton, Seaside and Clatskanie.
Leading the way for the Warriors were Jimmy Bechtel and Stephen Petersen, won won titles at their respective weights.
Bechtel took first at 189 pounds with a win over Levi Cherry of Neah-Kah-Nie in the final. Bechtel pinned all of his opponents in the first round.
Petersen won the title at 215 pounds, beating Dayton’s Gilbert Gonzalez in the final.
Runner-up finishes for the Warriors included Tony Nguyen at 103 (lost to Knappa’s Kody White in the final); Forest Cumbess at 130 (lost to Seaside’s Vincent Sproul in the title match); Conner Madison at 140 (lost to Nestucca’s Alex Sigle); Beau Torres (at 145 (lost to Knappa’s Luke Newberry in the final); and Chris Marks at 160.
Taking third for Warrenton were Josh Jones (189) and Matty Norris (285).
In addition to Sproul’s title, Seaside champions included Justin Near at 119 and Josh Terrill at 135.
