Moloka’i by Alan Brennert is an historical novel set in Hawaii’s infamous leper colony. Today known as Hansen’s disease and mostly eradicated, leprosy decimated South Pacific society in the 19th century. Rachel Kalama’s exile to Moloka’i at the age of seven created a tirade of emotion that tore her close knit family apart. Following her life through the next seven decades, a heart warming story unfolds. Rejected, forgotten and fearing death, the residents of Moloka’i band together and establish a unique society. The author adds interest by weaving in Hawaiian lore and historical perspectives such as the attack on Pearl Harbor. A compelling read.
