An oversized truck hauling a big crane through downtown Astoria got into a giant mess trying to turn the sharp corner at Eighth and Commercial streets Thursday morning and backed up traffic on Marine Drive for blocks. The incident illustrates a traffic problem the Oregon Department of Transportation and a citizens advisory group have been working to solve as part of the 20-year Greater Astoria-Warrenton Area Regional Transportation System Refinement Plan. Several options have been proposed, including rerouting some traffic onto Duane Street, moving the turn to Ninth Street and even removing a couple of downtown buildings. For 30 years, citizens have been proposing a bypass or truck route as the answer, but ODOT has nixed that option. Watch The Daily Astorian and www.dailyastorian.com for updates on this key issue.
