Letter: Change the mascot

I believe the Warrior mascot should be changed to one more reflective of the proud heritage of the indigenous Clatsop peoples vs. the generic Plains culture depicted throughout the school (“Mascot dispute has Warriors wondering,” The Daily Astorian, July 19).

Moreover, the fact the Confederated Clatsop-Nehalem Tribe does not have a problem should be considered by those in Salem who ultimately will make the decision this fall.

I am a 1990 graduate of Warrenton High School and member of the U.S. Army Reserve on active duty. As much as I appreciate Warrenton-Hammond Superintendent Craig Brewington considering honoring the “warriors” serving our nation in its armed forces, I can see how the depiction of a soldier might be offensive to pacifists, or the connection with guns might upset victims of school violence. Where does it end?

As a social studies teacher, I see this as a teachable moment for the students to learn more about the culture of the people who assisted the Corps of Discovery and early settlers to the region, as well as an opportunity to engage the students and community in this debate; something warriors of any era, defending their culture and heritage, would deem appropriate.
