Wauna Federal Credit Union helps students with scholarships

Several students were scholarship recipients and one was honored with an award.

The Wauna Federal Credit Union has given five $1,000 college scholarships to Clatsop and Columbia county students. The recipients are: Audrey Dove of Warrenton High School, who plans to attend Pacific University; Erin Gehrke of Vernonia High School, who will be attending Linfield College; Christine Hulegaard of Clatskanie High School, who will study at Oregon State University; Alexis Mehlnoff of St. Helens High School, who will also attend Oregon State University; and Cheryl Steppe of Astoria High School, who will go to the University of Washington.

David Rothberg, son of Dr. Martin Rothberg of Minot, N.D., and Ann Erickson of Astoria, received the Robert C. Painter, M.D., Internal Medicine Award, given to a senior medical student at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences who exhibits scholastic achievement and the attributes of conscientious concern for the patient, exceptional communication skills and a caring, humanistic personality as exemplified by Dr. Painter throughout his 40-year career.

Kala Little Star Rider and Phillip O. Willsey of Knappa High School have been awarded Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Oregon State Scholarships to assist in funding for their college education. They are two of 10 scholarship recipients in Oregon who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity and hardships in their lives, while also demonstrating strength of character, strong academics, commitment to pursue a college education and desire to contribute to society.

The Horatio Alger Association offers three annual scholarship programs: the National Scholarship Program, various state scholarship programs for high school seniors and the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship Program for U.S. veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Award winners receive financial aid counseling and internship placement assistance.
