SEASIDE – Weather permitting, the home opener for the Seaside (formerly Portland) Wildcats will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Broadway Park, when the ‘Cats host a doubleheader with the Southern Oregon Riverdogs from Medford.
It will be “Pack the Park Night” for the Wildcats, who moved their operations to Seaside following the 2005 season.
Now part of the newly-formed Northwest Collegiate League, the Wildcats are in their 21st season, which this year will include 23 home games at Broadway Park.
Former Knappa Logger Derek Jacobson, who recently completed his first season at Oregon Tech, is scheduled to start Saturday’s Game 2 on the mound for the Riverdogs, who will also take on the Wildcats in a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The NWCL, a collegiate wood bat summer league, consists of eight teams: the Bend Bucks, Olympia (Wash.) Athletics, Pacific (Calif.) Javelinas, Portland Titans, Seaside Wildcats, Southern Oregon Riverdogs, Tacoma (Wash.) Cardinals and Vancouver (Wash.) Flyers.
Team rosters in the NWCL consist of current college players from all levels and all parts of the country.
Seaside’s roster includes Neah-Kah-Nie graduate Kyle Corwin, while former Seaside Seagull Matt Hendryx continues to recover from an injury suffered in the spring.
Seaside’s full schedule is posted online at www.wcatsbaseball.com.
In addition to three home games this weekend, the home schedule will include promotional events such as “Ladies Night” (June 13 and July 11), “Team Poster Night” (June 20), “Youth Baseball Day” (June 24), “70’s Night (July 13) and “Fireworks Night” (July 14).
The Wildcats are coached by Gerald Bolden and assisted by Gulls’ coach Joel Dierickx.
General admission tickets for Seaside games are $5 or $6 the day of the game at the gate. Season passes are also available for $75, which are good for entry to all NWCL games played at Broadway Park, Sckavone Field in Portland and Propstra Stadium in Vancouver.
