Obituaries: Thomas F. Mannex

Thomas F. Mannex, 80, of Gearhart, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, in Seaside.

He was born in Santa Barbara, Calif., on March 8, 1926, to Henry and Lora Mannex.

After spending his early years in Long Beach, Calif., he attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, graduating from the University of Oregon in 1950. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi.

Mr. Mannex married Sally Nicol in Portland in 1951. She survives, residing in Gearhart.

He began his career in the lumber business in Portland with Dant and Russell Inc. After moving to Spokane, Wash., he retired to Gearhart 39 years later in 1990.

An avid golfer, Mr. Mannex served on the board of directors of the Astoria Golf & Country Club. Family members said he was a talented sculptor in wood and stone who won several prizes for his work in juried shows at the Trails End Art Association, of which he was also a member.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mannex is survived by a daughter, Jane Mannex; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Gail Mannex and John and Michele Mannex; and six grandchildren, Colin, Andrew, Emily, Anna, Lacey and Laura Mannex, all of Portland.

A memorial is planned at 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Seaside, with a reception to follow at the Astoria Golf & Country Club.
