The Cannery Cafe Lounge hosts a CD release party for the North Coast’s newest traditional Irish trio, Circled by Hounds, at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17. Their new CD, “Chasing Our Tales,” will be available for purchase. The group features Kathryn Claire on fiddle, guitar and vocals, Matthew Hayward-McDonald on guitar and vocals and Vash on percussion and vocals.
The trio blends traditional and original songs of work, politics, love and death with roll-up-your-sleeves, kick-off-your-shoes dance music. Claire and Hayward-McDonald, both singer-songwriters and Irish folk music enthusiasts, met playing music in Toad in the Hole, a Eugene-based Irish band. They went on to write, arrange and record music together and performed under the name Lorane’s Well. Vash has performed with many different groups in Arizona and around the Northwest, and has taught his unique style of bodhran playing to folks around the West coast. Vash met Claire and Hayward-McDonald while playing on the street three years ago. The three performers instantly hit it off and began collaborating in various combinations and under various names.
This spring, the trio officially moved their base of operation to the Nehalem Valley, where they have been writing, recording and performing extensively. The performers have traveled throughout the pacific Northwest, the Southwest and to Ireland and England this year, entertaining audiences young and old. Circled by Hounds offers an open-hearted good time to all who want to stop and listen, share in a song or dance to the tunes.
There is no cover charge for Friday’s party at the Cannery Cafe Lounge, No. 1 Sixth St. For more information, call (503) 325-8642.
