The arts shine bright on Stormy Weather weekend

CANNON BEACH – And they’re off! Artists have just one hour to create a piece of art in the Quick Draw competition at the first event of Cannon Beach’s Stormy Weather Arts Festival. After the competition, the artwork is auctioned off. The Quick Draw is Friday, Nov. 3, but is already sold out.

Stormy Weather features three days of music, art exhibitions and artists’ receptions. The citywide Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, is a tour of Cannon Beach’s many galleries that features demonstrations by artists from around the world. Galleries will also be open Sunday, Nov. 5.
Art comes in many shapes and sizes. Aviation artist William Phillips will appear in a show at Ernst & Ernst Collectors Gallery at 224 N. Hemlock St. Friday through Sunday. Joanne Hill will be at the White Bird Gallery at 251 N. Hemlock from 1 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, demonstrating her technique of Ukrainian egg decorating. The White Bird’s annual holiday exhibition starts that day and features several artists. An opening reception starts at 5 p.m.
Cannon Beach Elementary School art will be shown in the school gym at 268 Beaver St. from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Coaster Theatre at 108 N. Hemlock St. hosts several musical events. On Saturday, Talisman plays Celtic music at 11 a.m., followed by Annie Rapid playing folk music at 1 p.m. and Ellen Whyte playing jazz at 3 p.m. A Women in Song concert from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday costs $5.
Other musicians will perform around town from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, and the schedule is available at the Chamber of Commerce, 207 N. Spruce St. An open mic for musicians, writers and poets starts at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chamber.
Artists Gallerie at 224 N. Hemlock features Ruben Arizpe’s Lewis and Clark Expedition paintings. From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, the public can meet Arizpe and impressionist artists Don Bishop and Sally O’Neill, who are also showing their work at the gallery. At 5 p.m., an artists’ reception will be held with Arizpe, Bishop, O’Neill and artist-in-residence Michael Tieman.

The public can meet many of the artists at a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday. Gilbert Lozano demonstrates sculpture from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Spruce St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4.
Charette combines Yupik tradition with a contemporary vision meant to connect both worlds. He won the prestigious Artists’ Choice Award at the 84th annual Santa Fe Indian Market and has work installed for permanent display at the Portland Art Museum and the Hallie Ford Museum. Charette’s works are touring consecutively in two Smithsonian exhibitions.
Tickets for Charette’s appearance Saturday are $10 and space is limited.
Sculptor Lillian Pitt, a member of the Columbia River People, gives an informal talk on “Ancient Rock Art” at noon Sunday, Nov. 5. At 1 p.m. Sunday, sculptor Rob Wurzer will make an appearance at the gallery. Local musician Wes Wahrmund performs original jazz at 1:30 p.m. Sunday to cap the Stormy Weather Arts Festival happenings.
