A multi-city tour of U.S. Coast Guard stations to promote the upcoming release of “The Guardian” will not include a visit to Coast Guard Group Astoria, where part of the movie was filmed.
Actors Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner visited stations in Chicago, Houston, Miami and Alameda, Calif., where they lauded the agency and its rescue swimmers, who they portray in the movie. Some Coast Guard members at Houston’s air station watched an early screening of the film.
But the tour did not include Astoria, which operates the Advanced Rescue Swimmer School, or other filming locations such as Elizabeth City, N.C. – home to the Coast Guard’s basic rescue swimmer program – Kodiak, Alaska, or Shreveport, La., said USCG Cmdr. Kevin Raimer at the agency’s Motion Picture and Television Office. As far as he knew, the promotional tour was finished, he said this week.
In winter 2006, Coast Guard lifeboat crews from Station Cape Disappointment and helicopter pilots from Air Station Astoria assisted filming off Waikiki Beach. The movie is scheduled for release Sept. 29.
