The Kitchen Remodeling Has Begun!

At long last, my kitchen is being remodeled. I had the plans tweaked since the island was facing the wrong way. I wanted it to face the living room rather than the dining room. I wanted a little more elaborate island with a bookcase. Why waste space? Besides, I needed a place to put the books!

I really wasn’t sure what kind of wood finish I wanted for the cabinets. I just wanted wood rather than the soft, warped cabinets I had. I chose mocha pecan because it sounded really yummy. It kind of reminds me of flavored coffee beans. I will be getting quartz counter tops which has speckles of mocha pecan coloring in it. The tile will be stone in a cream color. I have a one-tracked mind, I need a coffee or latte’!

We chose the hardwood floors. I see some sort of vacation in the very near future. We have to be out of the house for a couple of days so that the finish can be applied. It’s too expensive to rent a motel in Seaside so maybe we will head off to someplace that has space like my son’s house in Seattle. With the packing up of the kitchen, my closets and spare room are crammed full of kitchen stuff. It’s everywhere! Now I have to find a place for all the furniture and living room stuff! Whatever happened to Extreme Makeovers? I’ll go away and come back and it will be all done.

The wall that separated my kitchen from the living room came down and part of it is now piled in the living room. We learned that the floors in my house were never installed correctly. Only ½” thick plywood was used instead of ¾” plywood and a lot of it was never nailed down. No wonder we had so many squeaks. The contractor was quite shocked at how poorly it was built. The original builder’s real occupation was cutting up meat. Wayne managed to re-hang my laundry room cabinet door with a broken wooden ruler since the door fell off when I was storing some things under the laundry room sink. The meat cutter, I mean house builder, used cardboard before. I don’t know why Wayne didn’t just use duct tape and tape the door back on the Canadian way!

I am trying to decide what kind of kitchen faucet I want. I checked with the place in Warrenton in the hopes that I could have assistance and advice of which brand to buy. I was shown the Delta brands since the others were too expensive for me to even consider buying. But I want a better brand! So off to Astoria I go to look there. I was told that Moen is the way to go since Grohe is obviously out of my price range. How would he know? Home Depot, here I come!

For now I am cooking dinners in the microwave and toaster oven. Wayne brings out the bbq every now and then. Thank goodness it’s summertime!
