Although it’s under new ownership, Astoria’s Portway Tavern continues to offer what regulars have grown to expect over the years.

Matthew Goodrich and David Warner purchased the longtime local business from previous owners Robert Heilman and Phyllis Ham in April, but have left the menu and staff roster intact.

“It’s the same great burgers, fish-and-chips and chowder,” said Goodrich.

Having served in the US Coast Guard for a number of years, most recently in Astoria, Goodrich and Warner were preparing to retire and buy an area business when they found out the Portway was for sale.

“I met my wife in Long Beach, and we like the area,” said Goodrich. Warner, meanwhile, owns other real estate in the area, “So he was planning to stay here too.”

The Portway, built in 1923, is the oldest watering hole in the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, located in Astoria’s oldest historic district, Uniontown.

The Portway Tavern is located at 422 W. Marine Dr., and serves lunch and dinner seven days a week. Call (503) 325-2651, or visit www.theportway.com for more information.
