Since it was established in 1976, Astoria High School Scholarships Inc. has depended on the generosity of parents, graduates, friends and volunteers to support its mission of providing scholarships to AHS and other county high schools. This year, the organization gave more than $86,000 to deserving students.

Following are the Astoria High School 2006 scholarship recipients, including some which are not part of the Scholarships Inc. group.

Rotary ClubThe Astoria Rotary Club selected five local high school students as recipients of its annual scholarship program. The five students are all seniors and plan on attending a college or university in the fall. The scholarship program is designed to award those students who have shown excellent community service that demonstrates the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”

The recipients are Alison Gerttula and Kelsie Schindler of Knappa High School and Brittany D. McGinnis, Maia Fastabend and Aaron Dugan, of Astoria High. Each will receive $1,000 toward expenses at the institution of their choice.

Wauna Federal Credit UnionEight graduating high school seniors were awarded college scholarships from Wauna Federal Credit Union.

The recipients, their high school and intended colleges are Nicole Barendse, Knappa, Oregon Institute of Technology; Laura Brookins, Vernonia, Oregon State University; Tyler Gramson, Astoria, University of Oregon; Crystal McAllister, Warrenton, Portland State University; Curtis Olds, Knappa, OSU; Justine Pillar, St. Helens, Linfield College; Kayla Pugh, Clatskanie, Seattle Pacific University or George Fox University; and Felecia Sinclair, Clatskanie, Art Institute of Portland.
