Rex Robert ‘Bob’ Fifield II

Rex Robert “Bob” Fifield II, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, in Medford.

He was born Sept. 23, 1923 to Lydia (Ross) and Rex R. Fifield in Weiser, Idaho.

He married Dorothy Herrmann June 5, 1947 in Monroe, Mich. She died March 26, 2003.

Mr. Fifield attended school in Grants Pass and joined the U.S. Navy. He saw action in Pearl Harbor. He served on the vessels USS Minneapolis, Thomas J. Gary, Nueces, O’Hare, Arneb, Mississippi, Baltimore and Los Angeles. He watched the Minneapolis sink as he was aboard the USS Solace hospital ship.

He received a Purple Heart in Guam.

Mr. Fifield returned to Grants Pass after the military and was a veterans’ representative for the Oregon State Employment office. He worked for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission in Grants Pass, Astoria and Portland, retiring in 1973.

Mr. Fifield enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, boating, photography, writing, electronics, music, sports and many other activities. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He was a past president and 49-year member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 68 and a member of the American Legion and Elks.

Surviving are three daughters and one son-in-law, Jackie Walworth of Lynnwood, Wash., Beverly Vollman of Toledo and Barbara and Don Beauchamp of Grants Pass; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Rex Fifield III of Beaverton and John and Betsy Fifield of Grants Pass; two sisters, Althea Kendall of Pullman, Wash., and Carolyn Blankenchip of Elma, Wash.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Jeanne Fifield of Madras, Les and Donna Fifield of Raymond, Wash., and Marshall and Aletha Fifield of Vancouver, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Dorothy Taylor, died in January 2006, and a brother, Merle Fifield, died in 1997.

Hull & Hull Mortuary of Grants Pass was in charge of cremation.
