Viewpoint – The Sunset Highway

Along the Sunset Highway about 40 miles west of Portland is where this patch of Lysichiton Americanus, or yellow skunk cabbage, makes its home. The plant carries the name because it supposedly smells like skunk. The odor is in the nose of the beholder, however. Skunk cabbage is native to Oregon and other parts of northwestern North America and grows in wetland areas. Skunk cabbage is so common in Oregon that gardeners rarely consider it worthy for the landscape, but is hugely popular in England, where gardeners actually create bogs to plant them in. The musky smell attracts insects for pollination.
