Astoria dominates 4-way track meet

BEAVERTON – The Astoria track team made their trip over the Coast Range a successful one Thursday, as the Fishermen boys and girls each won team titles in a four-way meet at Valley Catholic.

The Astoria boys racked up 125 points to easily outdistance Westside Christian (50), Valley Catholic (49) and Madras (39); while the Lady Fishermen (112) topped Westside (65), Valley Catholic (48) and Madras (32).

Highlight wins for the Astoria boys included: Steven Wentworth (200, 22.97), Cyrus Heick (400, 53.72), Josimar Macareno (3,000, 9:38.3), Kyle McMullen (triple jump, 42-21/2 and the high hurdles), and Justin Roberts (high jump, 5-10). Astoria also won the 400 relay in 44.99.

The Astoria girls were equally successful, with wins from Charlene Harber (200, 26.68), Katie Choate (1,500, 5:04.6, followed by Bridget Nurding, 5:26.6), Katrina Sentgeorge (300 hurdles, 51.51), Hilary O’Bryan (high jump, 5-0), Maia Fastabend (long jump and triple jump, 33-10) and the 1,600 relay (4:20.4).

Astoria swept the shot put, with Jamie Coggins (36-21/2) winning, followed by Laura Bobek (35-10) and Wendi Agalzoff (32-2).

Moses sets personal best in 400, wins triple jumpPORTLAND – The Warrenton track teams competed in a three-way dual meet at Portland Christian Thursday, and highlighted their appearance with a few career-best marks.

Warrenton’s Dallas Moses won the 400 meters in a personal best 52.67, and added a win in the triple jump (37-61/4). Kris Collier set a career record with a toss of 39-1 to win the shot put, while Michael O’Casey won two races – the 800 (2:08.19) and 1,500 (4:30.74).

In team scoring, Portland Christian defeated Warrenton (85-60), while the Warriors topped Corbett (101-41). On the girls’ side, Warrenton cruised past Corbett (85-15), but lost to the Royals (97-37).

Olivia Newbold soared 30-2 to win the triple jump, while teammate Janessa Gramson set a 30-second personal best in the 3,000 (13:15.02) to take second.

Jackson wins twice in distance eventsILWACO, Wash. – Ilwaco’s Carl Jackson was a double-winner Thursday afternoon, as the Fishermen hosted a five-way track meet with Mary M. Knight, Raymond, Willapa Valley and Wishkah Valley.

Jackson won the 1,600- (4:51.9) and 3,200-meter races (4:51.9), while the Ilwaco boys won five other events on the track.

Ilwaco’s Eddie Knick ran 11.83 seconds to win the 100 meters by .04 over Willapa Valley’s Ricky Bannish; Matt Kaino took the 200 meters in 24.63; and Jordan Williams ran 53.98 to win the 400 meters.

The Fishermen also won the relay events, 47.76 in the 400-meter relay, and 3:43.5 in the 1,600-meter relay.

For the girls, Ilwaco’s Katie Freese won the 400 in 1:06.33.

Two state champions also posted big marks in the meet, as Wishkah Valley’s John Clevenger tossed the javelin 178-9, and Willapa Valley’s Chelsi Friese cleared 10-6 to win the girls’ pole vault and smash the Peterson Field record.

Five Ilwaco seniors were honored during the meet. All are in their sixth year of participation in the Ilwaco Track program, and all will compete next year at the collegiate level: Katie Freese (Whitworth), John Hayes (Clark Community College), Shaun Peterson (Humboldt State), Jordan Williams (Gonzaga) and Dylan Wirkkala (Western Washington).
