Mary Catherine Thompson, 65, of Astoria, died Friday, March 31, 2006 in her home after a battle against cancer.

She was born Dec. 17, 1940, in Annapolis, Md., to Catherine and Joseph Polisky, who moved to Astoria while serving in the Navy during World War II.

Mrs. Thompson attended Star of the Sea Grade School, then graduated from Astoria High School in 1958 where she met her husband, Ken Thompson. They were married May 26, 1959, in Wichita Falls, Texas, shortly after Mr. Thompson completed Air Force basic military training. He survives and lives in Astoria. During Mr. Thompson’s 30-year Air Force career, the couple lived in Oklahoma, Delaware, New Jersey, Washington and Panama, and then finally moved back to Astoria in 1989.

Mrs. Thompson was a devoted mother to her four children and a dedicated Air Force spouse, according to family members.

She was an active youth center volunteer and mentor to numerous military children. She enjoyed crafts of all types and was an avid Norwegian pastry baker. Although not a Norwegian, she especially enjoyed making Krumkake, futtiman and lefse for her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thompson is survived by three daughters and one son, Linda Thompson of Naselle, Wash., Kimberly Bendt of Snoqualmie, Wash., Laurie O’Donnell of Tucson, Ariz., and Kirt Thompson of Honolulu; her sister, Paula Edwards of Kent, Wash.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Her parents, a sister, Loretta Ann, and brother, Charles Arthur (Buddy) Higgs, preceded her in death.

A memorial was previously held in Astoria.
