CANNON BEACH – A man died Tuesday when he fell off a cliff at Oswald West State Park and into the Pacific Ocean.

The man was apparently hiking alone around 3 p.m. when he came too close to the edge of a cliff on the park’s Neahkahnie Mountain, about two miles north of Manzanita, according to Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Coast Guard reports.

The agencies responded immediately, with a Manzanita rescue team assisting on jet skis, but the man was dead when they arrived on the scene, said Petty Officer Jamie DeSanno at U.S. Coast Guard Group Astoria.

A rescue swimmer, lowered from an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Astoria, retrieved the body.

Officials have not yet identified the man, DeSanno said.
