Loggers spike Warriors in NWL thriller

WARRENTON – Facing each other for the final time as members of the Northwest League, the Knappa and Warrenton volleyball teams hooked up in a five-game thriller and went out with a bang at Warrenton High School Tuesday night.

The Loggers and Warriors put on a show for the fans in the regular season finale, which ended in victory for Knappa, 17-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-18, 17-15.

Coupled with Corbett’s win over Neah-Kah-Nie, the Loggers are in a three-way tie at 8-2 with the Cardinals and Pirates (playoff seeds, sites and times to be determined).

Warrenton – which had to win in order to secure a playoff spot – fought to the bitter end against the Loggers, even holding a 14-10 lead in Game 5 before letting it slip away.

It was – to say the least – a tough way to lose, said Warrior coach Jim Hackwith. “It’s very disappointing, but it seems like sometimes we just can’t seem to finish, and that’s been our biggest problem this year,” he said.

Still, “the girls have really come along the last few games,” Hackwith said. “We played real well in a tournament at Adna Saturday (taking fourth). We beat every team there except Naselle. That gave us some confidence. We peaked at the right time, we just didn’t finish it off the right way.”

And the Loggers did, but not without a little apprehension. Trailing 14-10 in Game 5, Knappa’s Kristie Owings said, “I was so scared – we lost all of our intensity and we didn’t know what to do. Finally, we just decided we may as well have fun – that was the best way to go. We were excited coming in and we were ready to have fun, and go out there and do our best.”

Ashley Poole highlighted Warrenton’s win in Game 1. After fighting off a 7-3 deficit, Poole stepped to the serving line and turned a 9-8 lead into an 18-8 advantage with nine straight service points.

Katie Wolfe added a service ace and the Loggers failed to return a Justine Marxer serve at game point.

The Loggers bounced back and led from start to finish in Game 2, which featured several kills and stuff blocks by Knappa’s Rachele Schuyler. Warrenton trailed 12-8 in Game 3 before rallying to take a 17-13 lead on a block and a pair of kills by Olivia Newbold, and an ace serve from Whitney Johnson.

The Loggers led 21-20 before the Warriors reeled off five straight points to close out the game, as Johnson pounded a kill for the final point.

The momentum swung back to Knappa in Game 4. The Loggers took advantage of several Warrenton attack errors, coupled with a few hard-line kills from Nadra Evans.

That set up a fifth and deciding game, and after swapping leads (3-0 Knappa and 8-5 Warrenton), the Warriors forged a 13-9 advantage on a pair of missed serves by the Loggers, to go with a kill and an ace by Johnson.

And following a cross-court kill from Poole, the Warriors were one point away from a playoff spot with a 14-10 lead. But a missed serve opened the door for the Loggers, and Evans took advantage with four straight points from the service line to tie the game.

An off-speed kill from Poole gave Warrenton a brief 15-14 lead, but the Loggers came back with three straight off two Warrior attack errors and a tip by Owings off a set from Meagan Harn.

“We definitely needed this win,” Owings said. “Now we can play a playoff game at home instead of away. We hadn’t played since last Tuesday (Portland Adventist). We had pretty good intensity, but our loss to Neah-Kah-Nie put us down – the one where we won the first two and lost the last three.”
