Dorothy Arlene Penttila

Dorothy A. Penttila, 80, of Sea-view, Wash., died Monday, Oct. 17. 2005, at her residence.
She was born July 25, 1925 in Portland to William and Auda (Spencer) Grier.
She grew up in north Portland and attended Roosevelt High School. When she was a junior, her family moved to Knappton, Wash. She graduated from Naselle High School in 1943.
She worked in the shipyards in Portland during the war years and then attended Washington State University for 31/2 years.
While in high school, she met Kenneth “Joe” Penttila. They married July 5, 1947 at Naselle Lutheran Church. He survives and resides in Seaview.
The couple lived in Naselle until 1955, when they moved to Petersburg, Alaska. Mrs. Penttila worked with her husband operating Penttila Logging for a number of years. When the logging operation ended, she became the legislative information officer for the state of Alaska representing Petersburg.
Retirement took the couple on bicycling trips throughout Europe, Canada and the United States.
Family members said Mrs. Penttila enjoyed reading and was an avid bridge player. She was a member of Rotary in Petersburg and on the Longview (Wash.) Peninsula, a member of Petersburg Lutheran Church and later, Ocean Park Lutheran Church, a past member of Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and a leader of the Petersburg Drill Team.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Penttila is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Rob Swanson of Petersburg, Jodi and Joe Marino of Tumwater, Wash., and Carol and Brian Kandoll of Petersburg; one brother, Norman Grier of Seaview; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Bryner, Adam Swanson, Josh and Micah Marino, Chelsea Miles and Matte, Scot, Katy and Anni Kandoll; and five great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ethan and Sawyer Bryner and Austin and Lindy Miles.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rhonda Kay Penttila, and a brother, William Grier, who was killed in action while serving in World War II.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Naselle Lutheran Church. Following a graveside service at Peaceful Hill Cemetery, a reception will be held at the church.
