A 43-year-old man found dead behind the Astoria train station Thursday likely died of accidental or natural causes, Astoria Police Sgt. Dave Logsdon said today.

David R. Lindberg, an Astoria cannery worker, was found crumpled over a bicycle next to the Riverwalk near the foot of 22nd Street around 7:40 a.m. His body was reported by a Rosburg, Wash., man passing by on his bike.

Police couldn’t say how long Lindberg’s body lay on the pavement before it was reported or where he was headed. But it appeared a chain on his bicycle had fallen off, he stopped to fix it “and for whatever reason keeled over forward and ended up how he ended up,” Logsdon said.

Police found no foul play in the initial investigation.

“It is unknown whether Mr. Lindberg’s fall was accidental or was the result of a medical problem,” Detective Eric Halverson said in a press release. Additional tests will be performed by the Oregon Medical Examiner’s Office, he said.
