Helen A. Nordstrom

Helen A. Nordstrom, 89, formerly of Birkenfeld, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005 at the Northwest Continuum Care Center in Longview, Wash.

Mrs. Nordstrom was born June 28, 1916 in Vesper to John and Kate A. (Van Atta) Larson. She was raised and received her education in the Silverton community. She was the 11th of 12 children. As a young girl, she worked on the family farm.

She married Francis O. Nordstrom Oct. 6, 1936 in Portland. He died in January 1996, after celebrating 60 years of marriage.

The Nordstroms made their home in Birkenfeld. She later moved to Ocean Park, Wash.

Mrs. Nordstrom was a homemaker. She was a long-time member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia. She was also a member of Vesper Tea Ladies, TOPS, and the Jewell Garden Club. She was a 50-year member of the Winema and Natal Grange. She was active as a 4-H leader and also as a member in the Jewell, Clatskanie and Vernonia senior organizations.

Among her interests, Mrs. Nordstrom enjoyed gardening, knitting, playing cribbage and deer hunting in Eastern Oregon.

Mrs. Nordstrom is survived by one son, Ronald O. Nordstrom of Birkenfeld; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Ann and Pat Manning of Ocean Park and Linda Kate Larsen of Lacey, Wash.; four grandchildren, Mary Patrice Lathrop, Nortl Larsen, Elisa Larsen and Paul Matthew Manning; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters; and a granddaughter, Yvonne Larsen, in 1995.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 960 Missouri Ave. in Vernonia.

A Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m.

Family and friends are invited to attend a potluck reception immediately following the Mass in the Parish Hall.

After the reception, Burial Rites and vault interment will be held at Fish Hawk Cemetery near Birkenfeld.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Oregon Affiliate Inc., 1200 N.W. Naito Parkway, No. 220, Portland, OR 97209-2831, to the Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Department, Main Station, State Highway 202, Mist, OR 97016 or to a charity of one’s choice.
