Cannon Beach cottages star in new book

CANNON BEACH – People in Cannon Beach have an intense emotional attachment to the historic small cottages, author Jill Grady found.

Grady’s book, “Cannon Beach Cottages,” is a colorful history of Cannon Beach residences with modern and historic pictures of many of the cottages. The book is dedicated to local owners who have chosen to restore their cottages.

Grady, a cultural anthropologist and member of the Cannon Beach Historical Society, researched the role played by beach cottages. She reported that the cottages developed their own style out of necessity. Because of the difficulty of transporting building materials, many cottages were created from beach driftwood and storm-wrecked lumber.

“The goal of the work is to raise awareness about just how a community’s character is attained and why we are emotionally affected when its character is at risk for becoming lost,” Grady said in a press release.

Grady will sign copies of her book from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Cannon Beach Book Company, 132 N. Hemlock St. She will also be on hand from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 during a meal preparation class and presentation on historical cottage cooking at the EVOO Cooking School.
