An Astoria man died Friday evening from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Oregon Highway 202 about 4.5 miles east of Astoria, near Walluski Loop Road.

Oregon State Police said Dennis Hampton, 50, was traveling at a high rate of speed around 6:45 p.m. when he lost control of his 2000 Suzuki as he rounded a left-hand curve. The motorcycle slid sideways, striking a sign post and embankment. Hampton was thrown from the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet, but it came off during the crash. His son, Casey Hampton, was riding behind him.

A Clatsop County Sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper were first at the scene and began CPR before Medix Ambulance personnel arrived and took Hampton to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Speed was a factor in the crash, said troopers from the Oregon State Police Astoria Area Command area who are completing the investigation. In addition to the deputy, Olney-Walluski Fire Department personnel provided assistance.
