Richard Ernest ‘Rich’ Hopkins

Richard E. “Rich” Hopkins, 66, of Ocean Park, Wash., died July 9, 2005 at his residence.

Mr. Hopkins was born Aug. 7, 1938 in Providence, R.I., to Ernest and Alice (Phillips) Hopkins. He grew up in nearby Scituate, R.I. He graduated from Providence High School and later Providence College.

He served with the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962, serving during the Cuban missile crisis. He worked for the state of Washington as a transport utility inspector. Following retirement 11 years ago, he moved to Ocean Park.

He and Doris Hutchinson met in Ocean Park and were married July 6, 1991. She survives, residing in Ocean Park.

Mr. Hopkins was a member of the Ocean Park Moose, Ocean Park Eagles, Long Beach (Wash.) Elks, Occident Masonic Lodge No. 99 of Ilwaco, Wash., Columbia River Power Squadron (past commander), U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary No. 62, Astoria Yacht Club and American Legion Post No. 112 of Astoria. He was a board member of the Long Beach Loyalty Days Association and past board member of Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco. He was a volunteer for the annual Long Beach International Kite Festival.

Family members said his favorite pastime was driving the Astoria waterfront trolley with his good buddy Jim Mack. They said he enjoyed his time on the water, loved to travel by car or plane and had visited every state in the nation except Hawaii. He also appeared as an extra in the movie “The Ring Two,” recently filmed in Astoria.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hopkins is survived by three daughters, Sandy Smith of Spanaway, Wash., Barbara Hopkins of Olympia, Wash., and Debbie Christen of Troutdale; one brother, Robert Hopkins of Harlingen, Texas; one sister, Shirley Arnold of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Long Beach Elks Lodge No. 1937. A reception will follow.
