DEEP RIVER, WASH. -Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m., the historic Deep River Pioneer Lutheran Church will be the scene of an informal songfest of music ranging from “Anchors Aweigh” to “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” The hour of music is hosted by the members of Grays River United Methodist Church. It is part of this year’s summer vespers concerts at the recently restored church, located two miles north of State Route 4 between Naselle, Wash., and Grays River, Wash. Look for signs posted near East and West Deep River Road.

Aided by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation and donations by individuals and groups from around the Pacific Northwest, the all-wood church received a new roof, new exterior paint, and a unique “heritage outhouse” during the fall and winter of 2004. The restoration received an award from the State of Washington in May 2005, and the church is on the cover of the current Wahkiakum West telephone book.

Song sheets will be available for Sunday’s sing-along, and Pastor Barbara Bate will accompany the singing from the piano. The instrument was recently donated by Krist and Darbury Novoselic and tuned by Puget Island resident Mark Vik. Donations toward the continuing maintenance of the church will be welcome.
