Artistic Director Ruth Dobson will be joined by Katie Harman (Miss America 2002), Natalie Gunn, Amy Hansen, Alexis Hamilton, Janice Johnson, Anne McKee Reed, Katherine Swigert and Jennifer Gill. Audiences have heard these singers with performing groups throughout the Northwest, including Portland Opera, the Oregon Symphony and Portland Baroque Orchestra. The concept began with a 2003 concert at the Liberty, “The Three Sopranos,” which was comprised of arias written by Mozart for sopranos with whom he was in love. For 2005, nine consummate professionals will perform arias and scenes of passion, power, fashion and motherhood culled from 200 years of opera literature. Selections range from the fun and wit of Gilbert and Sullivan to the sublime music of Mozart and Puccini. The grand finale is the electrifying “Ride of the Valkyries” from Wagner’s great opera, “Die Walkure.” The evening promises to be very entertaining, filled with wonderful singing and great music.
Ticket prices range from $12.50 to $25, and include no service fees. Reserved seats can be purchased in at all Safeway TicketsWest Ticket Centers, charged by phone (Portland (503) 224-TIXX, all other areas (800) 992-TIXX) or on the Internet at www.astoriaperformingarts.com. If seats are still available the day of the performance, tickets will be available at the theater beginning at 5 p.m.
The event will be followed by a reception for the sopranos in one of Astoria’s historic residences overlooking the Columbia River.
