NEHALEM – Anyone who has lived in the Nehalem Valley or has an interest in valley history is invited to attend the Nehalem Valley Pioneer Association’s annual meeting Sunday, June 12 at the historic Natal Grange Hall, on Highway 47 between Mist and Vernonia.

The group convenes at 11 a.m., with a potluck luncheon following at noon. Entertainment will be provided by a Swiss musical ensemble from Mount Hood.

The Pioneer Association is celebrating its 81st year, having begun in 1924 with 22 charter members. Association President Jim Gabrielson’s great-grandfather, Ernest Hobert, was one of those charter members. Other officers of the Association are Vice President Douglas Bellingham, whose great-grandfather, Anton Birkenfeld, established the village of Birkenfeld, and Secretary-Treasurer Cynthia Weber, whose great-grandfather, William Johnston, was the first postmaster in Vesper and claimed a homestead in 1895.
