Dessert themed humor pops up at AHS extravaganza

Astoria High School will host its annual one-act extravaganza Friday and Saturday. This event marks the directorial debut of four of the school’s seniors.

One of this year’s directors is Rachel Roscoe. She is presenting two pieces that have dessert-themed humor: “The Age of Pie” and “Cake” by Peter Hedges. “Cake” puts a sugary spin on the old tale of “boy meets girl.” Jane and Russ spawn a friendship, and maybe something more, after admiring a cake while getting ready for a party. “The Age of Pie” follows eight characters in their quest to overcome their pie addictions at a self-help meeting, but will their temptation for the delicious dessert prove to be too strong?

Roscoe has been doing theater for the past three years with the high school. Roscoe says she is excited about directing her peers.

“I’m so thrilled to finally be doing this,” Roscoe said. “The shows are awesome and the cast is just great.”

Roscoe is currently enrolled in the directing class at Astoria High School. Three other directors will also be displaying their work at the one-act extravaganza. Jordan Okoniewski will be directing “Fifteen Minutes,” written by Dave DeChristopher. Raquel Blanco will be directing “Babel’s in Arms” written by David Ives. Adrian Pollut will be directing “Variations on the Death of Trotsky,” written by David Ives.
