Astoria Pharmacy remains open

Fraud being investigated; no indictments handed outNo new information was available this morning about a probe of a web-based drug seller involving a local pharmacy.

Federal agents served a search warrant on Astoria Pharmacy Friday and seized various computer records as part of an investigation into Xpress Pharmacy Direct, an Internet-based prescription drug retailer accused of selling medications without prescriptions and defrauding customers.

The probe, involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Food and Drug Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, is reportedly focused on pharmacies in Illinois, Minnesota and North Carolina as well as Astoria Pharmacy.

Astoria Pharmacy was open for business today. An employee referred questions to owner Fred Raw, who was unavailable for comment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Engish from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minneapolis, Minn., said today that no indictments have been handed down in the case, but said she could not answer any other questions.
