Arthur M. Anderson

Teacher, 77Arthur M. Anderson, 77, of Bay City, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, in Portland.

Mr. Anderson was born July 13, 1927, to Axel and Mabel Johnson Anderson in Astoria.

He grew up in Bay City and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the end of World War II in Germany. He then worked as a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska and on the Columbia River to pay his tuition at the University of Oregon; he received a master’s degree in English in 1955.

In 1949, he married Pat Phillips in Dallas, Ore.. She survives, living in Bay City.

Moving to California in 1957, Mr. Anderson taught English literature at Azusa High School, Gladstone High School and Citrus Community College until his retirement in 1982. While spending a year in Norway with his family from 1964 to 1965 on sabbatical leave, he ended up teaching school in Aalesund, Norway. After his retirement, he returned to Bay City and built a home for himself and his wife. At the age of 65, he earned two bachelor’s degrees, in commercial fishing and marine technology.

Mr. Anderson founded the Sons of Norway Lodge in Tillamook, helped start the Sons of Norway lodges in Medford and Klamath Falls, and served as long-term president of the Tillamook Strandskogen Lodge. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner. He served on the Bay City Council from 1994 to 2004. He enjoyed taking friends and family crabbing and salmon fishing in Tillamook Bay.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Anderson is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Kelle Anderson of Key Peninsula, Wash.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook, followed immediately by a gathering and refreshments at Bay City Hall.
