Stained glass, mysterious landscapes reign at Pacific Rim Gallery

Pacific Rim Gallery features two local artists through Jan. 2. Carolyn Ferguson shows “Works in Stained Glass,” and painter Martha Lee presents “Imaginary Landscapes.”

Ferguson has been living and creating stained glass art along the Oregon coast for the past 15 years. She often works on restoring historical windows dating back to the 1800s that are currently installed in older Victorian residences and churches.

She also does commissioned pieces to create custom entryways, transoms and sidelights, often involving several hundred pieces of individually hand cut glass foiled with copper or bordered with lead, brass or zinc. Recently, her abstract pieces have found dimension with the addition of other natural objects including agates, quartz, blown glass beads and shells.

Lee is a Washington native living on a six-acre ranch in Ocean Park, Wash. She works in oil on canvas and wood or with mixed media and egg tempera on Spartina grass paper. Some paintings are a slow buildup of layer upon layer, others emerge more rapidly, Lee said. Her subject matter is derived from mysterious places such as ravines, woods and volcanoes. Her work has evolved into four major cycles involving the elemental forces of nature: earth, air, fire and water.

Pacific Rim Gallery is located at No. 1 12th St., Suite 102, and is open daily. For information on these or other exhibits, call the gallery at (503) 325-5450.
