Violin virtuoso Angelis is a world-class composer and performer described as “a free spirit blazing a melodic trail through the territories of classical, world and folk music.” Her music, used by gymnast Kui Yuanyuan of China for her floor exercise, was highlighted on NBC’s world-wide coverage of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and has been nominated for several independent and international music awards.
Angelis is accompanied by her husband, flamenco-inspired guitarist Josef “The Wild Hungarian” Gault, who is also a popular program host on KMUN radio in Astoria. “Josef really broadened my outlook,” Angelis said. “One hundred years ago, music was confined to the areas in which it developed. But today, with modern recording, we are able to listen to music from every different culture. We now have a new ‘world chamber music.'”
For more than 20 years, Gault has devoted himself to the study of guitar stylings and techniques. He is most profoundly influenced by the flamenco fire of Manitas de Plata and Sabicas. His Hungarian ancestry is naturally reflected in his love of rhythms of Eastern European folk music. Since 1989, Gault has exclusively accompanied his wife. The two live in Astoria with their beloved collie, Holly.
