Irvine Phillip Bateman
Warrenton resident, 90Irvine Phillip Bateman, 90, of Warrenton, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 in Warrenton.
Mr. Bateman was born Dec. 7, 1913 in Gales Creek to John Benjamin and Nellie Ivas Bateman.
Mr. Bateman lived in Gales Creek until 1923 when the family moved to Banks. He graduated from high school in Banks in 1932. He later moved to Nehalem where he met his future wife. The family moved to Brookings in 1957 and he lived there until moving to Warrenton in early 2004.
On May 16, 1935, he married Margaret Ewan. She died in 1994.
During his working years, Mr. Bateman traveled around Oregon and Washington holding various jobs and settled in Nehalem in 1944. One of his first jobs was as a laborer breaking rocks for the highway over Neahkahnie Mountain. He also worked on the Wilson River Highway as a laborer in a repair shop, and on a ferry. But, he spent most of his working life as a catskinner. While in Nehalem he was a member of the Nehalem Volunteer Fire Department.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, square dancing, woodworking, gardening and spending time with the family playing cribbage.
Mr. Bateman is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Joanne Bateman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jerry and Sherry Bateman of Hermiston; two daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara and Darryl Niemi of Warrenton, and Nancy Cook of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Bob and Ione Copeland of Palo Alto, Calif., and Louise Schofield of Aloha; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service is 1 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Cemetery in Nehalem.
