Seaside 45, Cascade 42ILWACO, Wash. – Quickness and hustle beat size Monday night at Ilwaco High School as Seaside opened Ilwaco’s Christmas Tournament with a 45-42 win over Cascade of Everett, Wash.

The Gulls had their hands full with the Bruins’ starting lineup, which included 6-foot-7-inch sophomore Marcus Guffey, along with Andrew Pettersen (6-6) and Geraud Pepin (6-3).

Cascade – a Class 4A school with over 2,200 students – used its size advantage on the court to block several Seaside shots and change even more in the first half, but the Gulls took advantage of 12 Bruin turnovers to stay within a 16-15 deficit at halftime.

The Bruins went to work inside in the third quarter as Guffey scored eight points in the paint to help Cascade build a 32-25 lead.

The Gulls kept it close with 3-pointers by Vito Cerelli and Mitch Winstanley, then opened the fourth period with a 12-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Winstanley.

Playing without Nate Pogue and Josh Chilinski, Winstanley scored nine points in a starting role, while Cerelli led the Gulls with 13 and Jayme Toyas added eight.

John Knutsen scored key baskets in the second half off assists from Cerelli and Bryan Robison.

The Gulls iced the game at the free throw line, hitting 5-of-8 in the final 2:41. A Cerelli jump shot gave Seaside a 41-37 lead with 2:12 left, and the Bruins missed a game-tying 3-point attempt as time ran out.

Seaside was 13-of-20 at the line, while the Bruins hit just one of their three free throw attempts.

“We’ve had some good practice time since we played Wilsonville, and it’s paid off,” said Seaside coach Bill Westerholm, whose team improves to 4-4. “We didn’t shoot that good, but we ran through our stuff pretty well today.”

The Gulls will play Ilwaco in the championship game, 7:45 p.m. tonight.
