Young soccer players from Florence, Newport, Toledo, Tillamook, Seaside, St. Helens and Astoria converged on Astoria High School Sept. 28 to compete at the Elks District Soccer Shoot.

Competitors had several attempts at kicking goals and were treated to lunch and a trophy presentation at the Astoria Elks Lodge afterwards. Trophies were presented by Elks State President Tony Crawford, State Sergeant-at-Arms George LeMont and State Soccer Chairman Jim Holm.

Jordan Gagnon of Astoria and Mariah and Ian Gibbs of Seaside each took home a second-place trophy. First place in their age groups went to Emily Bliven of Warrenton and Sahara Barkemeyer, Justin Gagnon and Jessica Thornburg of Astoria.

The local winners joined others from throughout Oregon Oct. 18 at Timber-Linn Park in Albany for the Elks State Soccer Shoot. Players spent the previous night in a local hotel so they could be ready to compete that afternoon.

Astoria’s representatives won three trophies: Sahara Barkemeyer placed second and Justin Gagnon and Jessica Thornburg came in fourth in their divisions.

First-place winners at the state shoot went on to compete in the regional contest in Puyallup, Wash., Nov. 7.
