The sixth annual Dog Show on the Beach, held Oct. 18 at the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach, was bigger and better than before.

“With over 200 dogs participating and $4,000 of prizes donated for the raffle, the Surfsand Resort, along with Nutro Pet Products and area merchants, raised $1,200 in cash donations and an additional $500 in unclaimed or donated raffle prizes for the Clatsop County Animal Shelter,” said SANDY NEWMAN, event organizer.

Bad weather made it necessary to move the show indoors to the resort’s Haystack Gardens area, which turned out to “be a perfect backdrop for a dog’s day out,” said Newman.

The only victim of the weather was the “surfriders contest” but the other 56 doggie divisions were judged and ribbons awarded to canines from as far away as Carlsbad, Calif., and Juneau, Alaska.

Local winners were BEEMER, ARCHER, EMILY, PENNY, KATI, JAY, MARTY, MARTINE, IVY, ROCKY, DRAKE, IAN, GUS and ZENA, of Astoria; KUMA and SHAYNA, of Tolovana Park; DUKE of Nehalem; AUTOBAHN BLEU, BUDDY, GINGER, MADISON, TAWNY, DIVA and CECE, of Seaside; GIGI, MOXIE, ROSIE, RANDA, TOTO, SHAMAN, CALEB and COHOSH, of Warrenton; DOLLY of Gearhart; CHARLIE of Hammond; CAYENNE of Arch Cape; MOKA, LUCY, EDGER, SAMPSON and HUNNIEY, of Cannon Beach; and SANDY and GOLDIE, of the Clatsop County Animal Shelter.

NANCY BELL ANDERSON, chairwoman of the Education Team for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Association in Clatsop County, was part of a team that conducted a program to “test the waters” of youth participation in the Bicentennial.

The result of the program, which included crafts, hiking, canoeing, drumming, journaling and other kid-friendly activities, is a 46-page book by Anderson and HEATHER BELL HENRY – “Lewis and Clark Kid Projects & Crafts.”

“It would be useful for teachers, youth group leaders as well as parents and grandparents in helping acquaint youngsters with the Lewis and Clark story,” said Anderson.

The book sells for $12 and is available at the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Fort Clatsop, A Whale of a Tail bookstore in Seaside, Lucy’s Books in Astoria, and through Northwest Heritage Adventures, P.O. Box 2840, Gearhart, OR 97138.

On Oct. 22, Tongue Point Job Corps Center hosted the annual Gimre Awards, which recognize “community members whose partnership with Tongue Point has been outstanding,” said NAOMI ULSTED, business and community liaison at the center.

Awards were presented to Clatsop Community College’s English as a Second Language team; LARRY McMAKEN, former Astoria school district superintendent; JENNIFER COLLINS, former reporter for The Daily Astorian; Dr. HAROLD GABLE, dentist; SUNNY HUNT and MARILYN SCHREINER, tobacco prevention specialists, Det. KRISTEN HANTHORN of the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Department; Warrenton Elementary School and the Astoria Senior Center.

The Gimre Awards were established three years ago in honor of KERMIT GIMRE whose life was characterized by community service.

At the October meeting of the Astoria Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, four new members were welcomed to the group.

HELEN LAHTI of Astoria, MARI STRANDBERG of Knappa, ELLEN JENKINS of Ocean Park, Wash., and MICKI TOWELL of Seaside all proved lineage to a revolutionary patriot.

The Astoria chapter will meet next for an English high tea at Dublin Rose in Seaside, 1 p.m., Saturday.
