Featured readers for Monday Mike for spoken word at the River Theater at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10 are two Portland poets, Cindy Williams Guttierez, also a Miracle Theater producer, and Claire Sykes.
They recently read together by invitation at the Mountain Writers’ series in Portland. Guttierez is reading “Obsessions” and Sykes is reading “In These Parts.”
Guttierez is the winner of the Washington Poets Association’s 2000 Performance Poetry competition. As founder of the Portland Miracle Theater Group’s “!Viva la Word!” series, she directed “Conquista and Rebellion” and “Family, Food and Fiesta,” edited Milagro Press’ two anthologies of literary works and wrote the Miracle Theater Group’s 2001 and 2002 Christmas plays, “El Grincho’s El Dorado Escapade!” and “Milagro on Calle 401K.” Her poetry has been published in ZYZZYVA, PoetsWest, Chiyo’s Corner, Hipfish and other literary journals. She is a marketing consultant.
Sykes’ poems have appeared in Convolvulus; “The Hawthorne Anthology,” “Family, Food and Fiesta” anthology and onstage at Portland’s Milagro Theater; on Tacoma’s city buses and in her book, “The Listening Bell.” She has often been an invited reader at Mountain Writers’ Series’ Sunday at the Center. She works as a freelance writer of magazine articles, mainly about the arts, health and business.
Writers’ open mike follows the intermission. A $1 donation supports the theater at 230 W. Marine Drive. Refreshments are available.
