Episcopal vicar, 80The Rev. John Mann, 80, of Seaview, Wash., died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003 in Portland.

Father Mann was born Sept. 5, 1923 in Mineola, Long Island, N.Y., to John and Dorothea Storer Mann. He attended school in Hempstead, Long Island, and graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years, then worked for Radio Corporation of America.

In 1948, he married Joan Frances Graves in Hempstead. She survives, living in Seaview.

In September 1948, he entered Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, Conn., to study for the Episcopal ministry. After ordination, he served a Long Island church, then became vicar of churches in Montesano and Elma, Wash. He joined the staff of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, Wash., then served at Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento, Calif.. He came to the Long Beach Peninsula in 1976 and served as vicar of St. Peter’s Church in Seaview and St. John’s Church in South Bend, retiring in 1989.

Father Mann served on the boards of the Pacific Aging Council Endeavor and the Willapa Counseling Center, worked for the Olympia Area Agency on Aging and counseled in alcoholism. He served as chairman of the Pacific County Planning Commission and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Ilwaco Heritage Museum, Columbia River Maritime Museum, South Pacific County Humane Society and many environmental organizations.

In addition to his wife, Father Mann is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Aileen Mann and her partner, Cliff Hazen, and Victoria and John Hauer of Seaview; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Doran Mann; and four grandchildren, Elspeth Bugbee and Lewis, Miranda and Whitney Mann.

A private graveside service was held earlier.

A memorial will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Seaview.
