Gypsy, rock music played at Voodoo Room
Published 5:00 pm Wednesday, July 16, 2003
Ging Gang performs at the Voodoo Room 9 p.m. Friday, July 18, at the Voodoo Room, 1102 Marine Drive in Astoria. The Portland group is a three-piece and sometimes four-piece band that could be called cabaret rock/gypsy metal. But maybe more fittingly are two of the band members’ descriptions of what the music feels like to them. Stephen, aka “Cusco” who is an ex-member of The Dickel Brothers, describes the music as feeling as if you are in an older darker version of cities today.
Or, as if you are in an old decaying mansion and each song is like a different room you are wandering through, but there will always be rooms yet unexplored.
The main design of the music comes from Isidore, or also called “Izzy.” Izzy grew up around folk dancing and saw how different versions of music made people feel differently. He eventually was introduced to Tom Waits and “saw something there” and decided to explore where Waits was coming from. He searched through Balkin music and gypsy styles. With songs, “Zodiac City,” “Angelic Contraption” and “Eerie Light,” you can get a sense of the “dark world” Izzy is stepping through. He says, “the songs will be about love or about a city and disappointment, and at the same time in a lush atmosphere.”
Izzy and Cusco have been playing together for a year and a half and the third member is Bebe Neujahr, or maybe not (he may have a new name by this next show). They may have a violin player for this show, they may not. The mystery of their persona goes along with the mysterious sound of their music. Their instruments will include, for sure, the guitar, concertina, bass, and drums.
