Astoria police arrested a 33-year-old man after he reportedly ran out of his apartment to assault a neighbor who had been cutting grass with a weed whacker Thursday evening.
Police officers and a Clatsop County Sheriff’s deputy who provided them with assistance, found Augustine Andy Mendoza III, a resident of the Astoria Rescue Mission, outside another home in the 60 block of West Bond Street naked and being held down by another man.
According to a report by Astoria Officer Ben Ward, Mendoza had reportedly run out onto the street earlier that night to assault Kevin Condra, 49, who was cutting grass with a weed whacker. Condra told police that a naked Mendoza had hit him on the face and head about four times before he got behind him and grabbed the yard tool.
Then, Condra told officers, Mendoza pulled back on the weed whacker, which was still running, and began to choke Condra with it. At that point another man, James Williams Foss, 32, who had witnessed the attack decided to intervene and was able to pull Mendoza off of Condra. Foss then held Mendoza down until officers arrived.
Foss told officers that Mendoza had been saying during the scuffle that it was “God’s will,” and that he would be forgiven by God.
Once officers arrived Ward reported it took three officers, two Astoria police and one sheriff’s deputy, to get Mendoza into a squad car.
Another witness told officers that Mendoza had been living at the mission since June 1, and had reportedly been fired from his job Thursday. The witness said he had been walking around his residence naked for most of the evening.
Mendoza was arrested for second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and three counts of resisting arrest, he was lodged into the Clatsop County Jail.
