RiverSea Gallery in Astoria will host the exhibit “Drawing: The Language of Seeing,” drawings by Royal Nebeker’s Clatsop Community College art students.
The exhibit’s opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12 and will continue through April 30.
According to Nebeker, this exhibit is the result of 10 weeks of drawing by one of the most capable drawing classes he has ever taught. While the group ranges in age from 17 to 70, each student shares a serious interest in the fundamentals of drawing.
Participating artists are: Cathy Anderson-Orr, Jamie Curtis, Crystal Earl, Bryan Estoos, Roseby Foss, Sarah Harmon, Rich Hoffman, Mark Kenny, Lou Kister, Justin Lamie, Peter Miller, Christi Payne, Anita Robertson, Dale Rogers, Lorie Townsend and Jeremy Daniel.
Nebeker notes there is a strong focus on drawing in the CCC art program, where traditional academic drawing from the figure is consistently emphasized as the best method to train artists. He stresses that, “Creativity must be rooted in solid technique.”
The next opportunity for anyone interested in drawing instruction is Nebeker’s Summer Drawing Workshop, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 7 through 16. In addition to Nebeker’s instruction, visiting professional artists will add variety to the program. This intensive course is offered for beginning as well as advanced students. Drawing enthusiasts should contact Clatsop Community College for more information.
“The Nature of Wood,” an exhibit of furniture and sculpture by five Oregon Coast woodworkers, is currently showing at RiverSea Gallery and will also run through April 30.
RiverSea Gallery, 1160 Commercial St., in historic downtown Astoria, features contemporary works of art in all media, primarily by regional artists. The gallery is open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
