Protect your treasures

The old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is applicable to the Lower Columbia Preservation Society’s next workshop, “Securing Your Valuable Antiques and Artwork.”

The workshop will demonstrate techniques for securing valuable antiques and artwork, or just sentimental treasures, that will prevent possible damage during an earthquake. The workshop is 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Heritage Museum, 16th and Exchange streets.

Art conservator and LCPS member Scott Reuter, former executive director of the Clatsop County Historical Society and staff member at the John Paul Getty Art Museum, and consultant and installer for private collectors, will show slides, photos and demonstrate wax mounting techniques.

For more information about the workshop, call (503) 325-3981.

Admission is free to LCPS members, and $5 for members. For an additional $5, individuals can receive a one-year membership in the organization, which includes three workshops and three lectures for free or at discount, the organization’s newsletter, “Restoria,” and mailings and e-mails regarding preservation related news and events.

The Lower Columbia Preservation Society is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “preserve, protect and promote the historic architecture in the Lower Columbia region.” Membership is open to everyone. For membership information, call Melissa Yowell at (503) 325-1892 after 5 p.m.
