The bad news: Scappoose only had two shots on goal in the half. The Gulls, meanwhile, scored three firs-half goals and one in the second on their way to a 4-1 win over the Indians at the Lower Columbia Soccer Complex.
Junior Ben Dueber recorded the hat trick for Seaside, scoring twice in the first 23 minutes, then adding a goal in the second half.
All in all, it was a fairly easy day for the Gulls, who improve to 2-1-1 overall.

“We didn’t do exactly what we wanted to,” said Seaside coach Jon Broderick. “First of all, we wanted a zero (for Scappoose). We made a mistake on defense and got sloppy. And we went too deep on the crossing passes. We made too many shallow crosses that were easy to defend.”

Trigg Espelien of Scappoose, left, and Seaside’s Rick Stella battle for possession of the ball in the closing minutes of Wednesday’s game at Lower Columbia Soccer Complex.Dueber scored his first goal just 1 minute, 50 seconds into the game, taking a long pass down the center of the field from Nathan Pogue and scoring past Scappoose keeper Spencer Knudsen.
The Gulls made it 2-0 at the 17:25 mark when Kyle Romine dribbled through the Indian defense and scored from the top of the penalty area.
Dueber’s second goal came in the 23rd minute from 15 yards out, but the Indians responded less than a minute later with their first score.
A momentary lapse by the Gulls allowed Scappoose forward Matt Greene to get past the Seaside defense and score past keeper Jared Cederstrom.
Dueber broke a scoreless second half in the 74th minute with his third goal, off an assist from Jeff Hinton.
“Ben did a good job of giving our midfielders a chance on the ball,” Broderick said. “He could have taken every ball forward and tried to score, but he was trying to get some more guys involved, because we have good shooters.”
The Gulls play at Rainier Friday.
