- A 53-year-old fisherman is missing off Clatsop Spit.
The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a man who was fishing from shore near Clatsop Spit on Tuesday.
The 53-year-old Scappoose man, who was wearing waders while fishing, texted his wife just before 10 p.m., Petty Officer 1st Class Levi Read said. She then fell asleep and reported him missing about 9 a.m. Wednesday after realizing he had not come home.
The Coast Guard has not publicly identified the man.
Crews from Station Cape Disappointment and Sector Columbia River spent nearly 24 hours in the area with a 47-foot motor lifeboat, a 29-foot vessel and a helicopter. The search was concentrated near the Columbia River side of the South Jetty, Read said.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing man,” the Coast Guard wrote in a tweet.
